Special briefing about the PRC economy by Mr Arthur Kroeber, 20 June 2022
Our first special guest was Mr Arthur Kroeber, founder of Dragonomics, who briefed Board members following the first Board meeting. Mr Kroeber provided an overview of the challenges facing the Chinese economy and shared his forecast for the economy if the present dynamic zero-Covid policy continues past the CPC Party Congress. He also assessed the impact on the PRC economy of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Mr Kroeber is one of the world’s leading experts on the Chinese economy. In 2002 he co-founded the China-focused research service Dragonomics in Beijing and was the editor of its flagship journal China Economic Quarterly through 2017. Since Dragonomics’ 2011 merger with Gavekal he has been head of research for the combined operation.
Mr Kroeber is also an Adjunct Professor of Economics at the NYU Stern School of Business, a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and of the National Committee on US-China Relations, and a senior non-resident fellow of the Brookings-Tsinghua Center in Beijing. He and Ms Linda Jakobson co-authored a book together in 2007 (Innovation with Chinese Characteristics. High-tech research in China. Palgrave). His most recent book China’s Economy: What Everyone Needs to Know was published by Oxford University Press in 2016, with a second edition in 2020, and is widely used in university classrooms.
